This game is an upward scrolling arcade game in which the player must move left and right as the rapidly falling player character weaves around obstacles. Aside from that¨ the core mechanic is colour switching. The player is able to swap their shield for either a blue or orange one.
Orange shields protect against orange lasers and blue shields protect against blue lasers. The player must keep switching according to the randomly generated obstacles while moving left and right to guide their descent past lasers and other obstacles.
We are using the Unity game engine to develop the prototype. Because it is the first time we were working on an official game prototype (though I have worked on other mini-games throughout training, GameJam etc. previously), we have come up with lots of great ideas and eventually decided on this one. The design of core mechanic is quite simple but getting more complex as we would like to have a preset orders of pattern for both obstacles and items pickup. Hence, I was developing a simple system that would randomly select from a collection of various obstacles and items based on the current player status and level. The final result looks amazing as the system can generate all kinds of preset levels that would never be the same which would entice players to keep playing.
Besides, I coded the swinging effect on the player to simulate the free fall action as well as the colour changing of the player and his headlight.
On the other hand, I would like to find out how this game will perform in the mobile. Hence, I have also implemented the tilting control in the game so it can be played on the Android phone. The result looks awesome and I think the tilting control is the best control method as compared to the joystick/ buttons.
The ColorFall is so simple but already giving good fun in our prototype. I think this game has a lot of potential especially in the mobile platform, providing we can further develop this game with better arts and level design.
Thanks guys for the wonderful idea and hard work in less than 3 days!!!
